It can be quite a sight indeed to encounter an orchid of epic proportion, towering stature or monumental architecture, when the normally exquisite herbaceous or evergreen perennial takes an engrossing turn to make a grand statement en mass, to hit the jackpot of gigantism, to pile on the effects of polyploidy, and to impress the viewer with unbridled surpluses or opulent excesses, such that the experience is one of a luxurious kind, superbly presented and dimensionally confronting.
Meeting a magnificent orchid specimen can evoke sustained wonderment, as the observer is faced with the sheer physicality of a botanical runaway success, an ultimate exemplar in its class, family, genus, species or hybrid capable of engaging the human senses to extravagant degrees and on lavish scales. There is the possibility that certain feelings or sensations could arise in the viewer who is spellbound or transfixed by the power of grandeur, by the richly magnified bearing of the sumptuous and gorgeous, by the gallant aura of the resplendent and splendiferous. There is enormous potential to be held captive by the composition of a remarkable orchid specimen commanding an expansive space or setting.
Whether large orchids are strikingly potted as accent plants or majestically cultivated in gardens, whether they form a colossal aggregate or function as the principal focus in a dramatic design or exciting landscape, and whether they live aloft as glorious epiphytes or grounded as prodigious terrestrials, a beholder cannot fail to be thrilled or enthralled, awed or exalted, energized or mesmerized, their state of mind and concentration being foiled by a temporary suspension of belief, or filled with admiration and wonderment, even flamed by jealousy and curiosity.
Growing specimen orchids is a way of keeping the plants whole, seeing their full potential, and appreciating their true beauty, especially when they are being enshrouded in a multitude of good-looking blossoms. Fabulous specimen orchids can remain in bloom much longer, as their flowers open successively, imparting lengthier enjoyment in the home or greenhouse, where they can be accommodated in solitary splendour or paired majesty, on a chosen side table in a bright corner, around a special location in the conservatory, or at a desirable space in the living room.
