SoundEagle would like to welcome you and the whole world with an interactive platform that is serving not only as a communal website for amassing tips, ideas and findings, but also as the ongoing embodiment of a fully functioning (horticultural) society and community (including being a social media and educational platform) with specific goals and missions towards culturing, promoting and preserving orchids in all their diversity.

As such, the styles and contents of this website reveal in varying degrees certain underlying commitments to values, people, learning, innovation, and preservation of written and intellectual knowledge.

Queensland Orchid Society Autumn Show on 24 March 2012

The state of Queensland in Australia is very important in providing the natural habitats for many species of orchids, especially the epiphytes. According to Australian Orchid Genera – an information and identification system:

Orchidaceae comprises about 9% of the Australian flora. Of the approximate 1700 indigenous species, about 1300 have been named and the rest await formal botanical recognition. The Australian orchid flora is mainly dominated by terrestrial species (86%) with the remainder (14%) adopting an epiphytic habit. Many terrestrial species are prominent flowering elements of the understorey in a range of habitats in the mesic parts of Australia, whereas the majority of epiphytes occur in tropical Queensland.

  1. The Orchidaceae and Asteraceae are the two largest families of flowering plants, containing more than 26,000 and 23,000 currently accepted species. Nearly ten percent of all flowering plants on Earth are orchids.

The Begoniaceae has 1,600 and the Gesneriaceae 3,200 species, both far smaller than the previous two families.

New plants are still being discovered and classified in all of these families.
